Higher prices out of Memphis and Columbus tell us that retail traffic is moving, and higher rates out of Dallas and Seattle show us that the improvement is far-reaching. We got some improvement on some backhaul lanes too, where rates are generally higher going in the opposite direction: Buffalo to Columbus rates rose 15¢ to $1.65/mile.

Retail freight is driving rates up in Memphis and Columbus , especially on lanes heading into the Northeast. Things are heating up in California, with lots of loads rolling out of Fresno , and a big rebound under way in Sacramento. Columbus is heating up, and loads from there to Philadelphia paid $2.65/mile

Spot market rates continued their upward trend after the holiday, and retail shipments boosted prices on a few lanes. Retail shipments also kept pace after Memorial Day and boosted prices on these lanes: Columbus to Buffalo paid 24¢ better at $2.62/mile. Chicago to Detroit rose 18¢ to $2.47/mile mile on average.

Columbus , OH is also a hot market for August, and it’s benefiting from the seasonal transition, as well as increased consumer confidence. Freight out of Columbus is associated with retail traffic. NOT SO HOT – Unfortunately, we still haven’t seen the volume we expected out of Fresno.

Freight patterns showed increased retail trade ahead of Memorial Day weekend, and since some drivers finished the week up early ahead of the holiday weekend, capacity also tightened. Memphis to Columbus was up 17¢ to $1.94/mile. Fresno to Denver surged 52¢ to $2.70/mile Fresno to Chicago was up 35¢ to $2.16/mile.

Both those markets are distribution hubs for e-commerce, which has stretched the traditional holiday retail freight season well into December. Van rates on the lane from Columbus to Allentown have averaged $2.96 Out of California, reefer loads paid less in Ontario and Fresno.
