Projections for Central California produce are still strong for June, so we’re keeping an eye on the Fresno market, but those shipping gaps meant that rates didn’t continue their upward trend on many of the top reefer lanes. Declining lanes were few and far between.

Spring freight rates: Stable or stuck?

Houston to Oklahoma City slipped 12¢ to $1.92/mi. Fresno volumes were up, but other parts of California went softer. Fresno to Seattle lost 18¢ to $2.36/mi. Just a handful of lanes fell more than 10¢ cents per mile: Seattle to Eugene,OR, dropped 15¢ to $2.35/mi. Columbus to Memphis fell 14¢ to $1.70/mi.

Delayed Produce Could Lead to a Busy May

Houston to Oklahoma City was up 10¢ to for a springtime high of $1.91/mile. Out of California , volumes were flat, with higher load counts out of the Fresno area offset by declines farther south. Outbound averages fell in N ogales and Fresno , but that had more to do with a change in where the freight was going.

Vans and Reefers Have a Friend in California

Fresno and Sacramento have lots of loads, too. There were a lot of loads available in California, though, especially outbound from Los Angeles, Fresno , and Ontario , which is the gateway to the "inland empire" of agricultural markets in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys. Oklahoma City is also super-hot for flatbeds.

Major Freight Markets Saw Biggest Rate Surge of the Year

Houston to Oklahoma City rose 24¢ to an average of $2.04/mile. Central California produce returned in a big way last week, and outbound reefer rates soared 13% in Fresno. Fresno to Denver surged 52¢ to $2.70/mile Fresno to Chicago was up 35¢ to $2.16/mile. Atlanta to Memphis paid 22¢ better at $1.93/mile.

Houston to Oklahoma City cooled, falling 15¢ to $1.73/mile. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. That may have caused reefer trucks to spill over into van capacity out in Charlotte , with the extra competition driving down outbound van rates.
