Severe weather causes freight rates to slip

A huge snowstorm in Denver last week closed three interstate highways: I-25, I-70 and I-76. In March so far, volumes are no better than February, and since capacity has been abundant, rates continue slipped. Road closures isolated Denver from parts of the supply chain last week. Denver to Albuquerque, NM increased to $2.07/mi.

Extra capacity takes a bite out of prices

That extra capacity cut the national van load-to-truck ratio nearly in half. Denver to Houston was up 13¢ to $1.37/mile. Denver to Albuquerque was down 30¢ to $2.04/mile. That meant that trucks were out on the highways in full force following the holidays. Still, not many lanes had high higher rates last week.

Rates rise, but gains may be temporary

Truckload capacity remained tight during the first week of 2019, and national average rates increased 3¢ for vans, reefers and flatbeds. That pushed the load-to-truck ratio up 6%, signaling that demand outpaced truckload capacity. The three largest price increases last week came out of Denver.

Van Rates Adjust to Changing Holiday Demand

Truck posts rose 12%, which meant it was a little easier for shippers and brokers to find capacity. Most of the big increases last week were out of Denver , where the average outbound rate jumped up 7%. Denver to Phoenix rose 19¢ to $1.52/mile. Van rates jumped up 15¢ in both directions between Los Angeles and Denver.
