Cleveland to Chicago also paid 15¢ better at $1.75/mile. Projections for Central California produce are still strong for June, so we’re keeping an eye on the Fresno market, but those shipping gaps meant that rates didn’t continue their upward trend on many of the top reefer lanes.

Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. Demand is still extra-high out of potato-shipping regions ahead of Thanksgiving, but rates from Twin Falls, ID, to Phoenix dropped 27¢ to an average of $2.74/mile. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

We’re hearing a lot about shipping gaps in California due to delays in planting because of an unusually wet winter, which explains the flat reefer volumes last week. Out of California , volumes were flat, with higher load counts out of the Fresno area offset by declines farther south. RISING LANE RATES. FALLING LANE RATES.

Did you know that California ships 87% of the strawberries in the U.S.? Berries started moving out of Santa Maria in late February, and Ventura County is gearing up for peak shipping season. Fresno to Denver is still well below summer pricing, but it picked up 21¢ to $2.14/mile mile last week.

Miami continued to ship lots of reefer roads, while Lakeland in the central part of the state joined the Florida parade. We expect load counts to pick up there and in the border market of McAllen, TX , with avocados shipping ahead of Cinco de Mayo. Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market.
