Spot Market Freight Rates Soar After Hurricane Harvey

Reefers still waiting for spring

While the Lakeland, FL market was a big winner last week — gaining over 20% more volume — those gains were more than offset by a week-over-week slump in other major reefer markets, including Fresno, Nogales, Boise and much of the Midwest. Grand Rapids to Cleveland was down 31¢ to $3.83/mi.

Spring surge delayed again

A 23% increase in loads moved out of Fresno was led by a surge of freight on the lane from there to Seattle, coupled with a 17-cent boost to the average rate per mile. Grand Rapids to Cleveland increased 29¢ to $4.14/mi. Fresno to Seattle gained 17¢ to $2.57/mi. Nogales to Los Angeles jumped 23¢ to $2.56/mi.

Major Freight Markets Saw Biggest Rate Surge of the Year

Central California produce returned in a big way last week, and outbound reefer rates soared 13% in Fresno. Fresno to Denver surged 52¢ to $2.70/mile Fresno to Chicago was up 35¢ to $2.16/mile. Cleveland finally joined the party too. mile on average. Miami to Baltimore was up 35¢ to $2.63/mile.

Reefer Capacity Gets Tighter Ahead of Thanksgiving

Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. The biggest drop-off last week was the lane from Grand Rapids to Cleveland , which plunged 54¢ to $3.16/mile. The biggest spike was the lane from Chicago to Kansas City , which surged 49¢ up to $3.10/mile. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.
