Last week was a short week, as most carriers needed to get drivers home in time for the Christmas weekend. Combine all that with the tighter capacity that came about as a result of the ELD mandate going into effect, and you get higher rates out of nearly every major market for refrigerated freight. Not a good week at all.

Van volumes are actually up compared to where they were at this time last year, but that has been met with increased capacity. In the top 100 lanes last week, just 38 rose, while 58 fell, and 4 were neutral. Just a handful of lanes fell more than 10¢ cents per mile: Seattle to Eugene,OR, dropped 15¢ to $2.35/mi.

Atlanta is the top market for load posts on DAT Load Boards , and tighter capacity has led to higher rates there. The best news was out of Fresno , where volumes stayed steady from the previous week, even though last week was just a 4-day work week. Darker states in the map above shows where there's stronger demand for trucks.

So even though we're now going through the typical seasonal slow-down for mid-January, rates are still higher than usual in some places for this time of year. That's means there are more trucks from big carriers available on the spot market, and the extra capacity pushed rates down on a lot of high-traffic lanes last week. HOT MARKETS.
