Freight rates were relatively calm back when the full enforcement of the ELD mandate went into effect on April 1, as conditions had already settled into what’s feeling like the "new normal." Basically every major van freight market not named “Seattle” had higher rates last week, especially Houston, Columbus, and Buffalo.

Freight rates have steadily declined since the Fourth of July, but they're still high. There isn’t much urgency for long-haul freight at this time of year, so a lot of shipping has moved over to rail. Out West, Seattle to Eugene, OR , jumped up 12¢ to $2.97/mile. Buffalo to Allentown, PA also added 11¢ at $3.46/mile.

We got a welcomed surge of spot market freight to close out July. That would’ve led to more reefer trucks competing for van freight, and the extra capacity kept rates down. Van load counts were already up big last week, with an uptick in freight moving out of L.A. The top 4 were the same as last week – Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston and Dallas – but Indianapolis edged out Memphis for the no. Seattle to Eugene, OR was up 13¢ to $2.13/mile. RISING LANE RATES.
