Construction activity boosted rates out of Las Vegas : The lane to Los Angeles was up to an average of $3.31/mile. Las Vegas to Phoenix also jumped up to $2.97/mile. Continuing the regional theme out of Nevada: Flatbed rates from Reno to Seattle rose to $2.97/mile. That pushed rates lower out of Tampa.

Rates rose across the region, with shippers moving freight out of the way of the coming storm. Construction materials often move out of Las Vegas and Reno , and it’s a little early in the season for those markets to weaken as much as they have. The lane from Las Vegas to Phoenix lost 57¢ at $2.57

Freight patterns showed increased retail trade ahead of Memorial Day weekend, and since some drivers finished the week up early ahead of the holiday weekend, capacity also tightened. In general, markets that feed into the Northeast were up, while Denver, Seattle , and rates coming out of the Northeast were down. Out West, L.A.

The number of loads available on the spot market last month was also up more than 100% compared to February 2016, which is a pretty good sign that the freight recession really is over. Rates got the biggest boosts out of Memphis, Atlanta and Seattle. Since the freight coming out didn’t pay very well, inbound lanes paid more.
