With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s the reefer segment that is driving seasonal demand, as grocery stores prepare for the big day. And with Black Friday right around the corner, we may soon see an increase in van demand and rates too. The main driver of demand continues to be the Los Angeles freight market.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so trucks are still in high demand to move refrigerated freight. Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. That pushed rates higher in many areas, especially out of Chicago and California. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

Fresh produce often drives the demand for reefer freight, and this year, wet fields and high summer temps led to late planting and lower yields out of California. Twin Falls, ID, to Phoenix jumped up 48¢ to $3.43/mile. On average, outbound lanes from Fresno, CA , soared 13%. per mile, its highest mark in 3 years.

We'll have to wait and see how the trends play out when reefer demand heats back up. Out of California , Fresno outbound pricing jumped 4.4% Dallas to Phoenix , up 22¢ to $2.28/mile. That's not nearly as dramatic as the drop in truck posts we saw back in December, when the mandate first went into effect. HOT MARKETS.

Late January is typically a time for lower rates and less demand, but spot market volumes haven't fallen off sharply like they did around this same time a year ago. There’s no consistent market driving produce right now, so reefer volumes have been shifting around the country. Reefer trends have been similar to vans. HOT MARKETS.

Plus, when reefers are in high demand, van capacity tends to tighten up, too. Look for a load from Twin Falls to Phoenix , which paid $2.24 From Phoenix, head back to L.A. with a third leg that originates in Reno, Fresno, or a handful of other hot markets, as well. Reefer load availability increased 7.1% and Canada.

Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. Outbound lanes there dipped slightly despite fairly strong demand ahead of Easter. Outbound rates in the past month have surged in Birmingham, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Los Angeles , and last week saw a big uptick in prices out of Rock Island, IL.
