Reefer Capacity Gets Tighter Ahead of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so trucks are still in high demand to move refrigerated freight. Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. That pushed rates higher in many areas, especially out of Chicago and California. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

Spot Market Reefer Rates Hit a 3-Year High

Fresh produce often drives the demand for reefer freight, and this year, wet fields and high summer temps led to late planting and lower yields out of California. Twin Falls, ID, to Phoenix jumped up 48¢ to $3.43/mile. On average, outbound lanes from Fresno, CA , soared 13%. per mile, its highest mark in 3 years.

Truckload Rates Finally Catch Up to Freight Volumes

Shipments out of the Santa Maria District also pushed rates up out of the Fresno market. Outbound lanes there dipped slightly despite fairly strong demand ahead of Easter. Outbound rates in the past month have surged in Birmingham, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and Los Angeles , and last week saw a big uptick in prices out of Rock Island, IL.
