For van freight, last week's national load-to-truck ratio was the highest it's been since mid-2014. Prices on the Memphis to Columbus lane kept climbing, up another 26¢ to $2.26/mile. Out west, L.A.

The number of loads available on the spot market last month was also up more than 100% compared to February 2016, which is a pretty good sign that the freight recession really is over. Rates got the biggest boosts out of Memphis, Atlanta and Seattle. Since the freight coming out didn’t pay very well, inbound lanes paid more.

The last time the average van rate was below $2 per mile was 16 months ago, in September 2017. There’s the normal seasonal slowdown that occurs around this time each year, but falling fuel surcharges and increased capacity in the spot market are adding to downward pressure on rates. Memphis to Indianapolis dipped 16¢ to $2.01/mile.

That, plus the normal winter slowdown, has led to 7 straight weeks of declining spot rates, although prices are still elevated for this time of year. Just when capacity gets tight, demand is expected to surge. The first quarter closes on Saturday, March 31, and shippers will be in a rush to move freight before the weekend.

Load posts edged down on DAT load boards , but national average rates rose 3¢ per mile for vans and flatbeds, while reefers added 4¢ Van Load Counts Stay Near All-Time High. There’s a lot of freight out there for vans right now, and August had a stronger start than any month in more than a year and a half.
