The urgent need for supply chain resiliency is increasing interest in onshoring, reshoring, and nearshoring strategies. After years of economic volatility, labor shortages, extreme weather, demand and supply shocks, and geopolitical tensions, supply chain leaders are looking to calm the chaos and bring back predictability. Yet, their search is more than a matter of finding low-cost alternatives.
I have often compared supply chain disruptions to buses on London’s Oxford Street — if you miss one there’s always another one coming. However, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF), the London bus analogy is no longer apt. The analogy assumes that each disruption (or crisis) is an individual event and, according to the WEF, that may no longer be true for many crises.
