Freight rates were relatively calm back when the full enforcement of the ELD mandate went into effect on April 1, as conditions had already settled into what’s feeling like the "new normal." Basically every major van freight market not named “Seattle” had higher rates last week, especially Houston, Columbus, and Buffalo.

Freight rates have steadily declined since the Fourth of July, but they're still high. There isn’t much urgency for long-haul freight at this time of year, so a lot of shipping has moved over to rail. The spot market cooled in Texas , and outbound rates in Dallas and Houston have fallen more than 10% in the past month.

That song is from "Carousel" and I started humming it under my breath as I sat down to write about last week's freight market. Looks like we won't have to wait until June for freight and rates to be "bustin' out all over" though, because rates are already heading in that direction. Memphis to Indianapolis gained 22¢ to $2.58/mile.

More loads are moving out of Cleveland and Houston, but the big surprise was a surge in volume and rates out of Roanoke, Virginia. That's typically a small market for flatbed freight, but a newly expanded steel mill there appears to be generating more freight, and may be benefiting from tariffs on foreign competition.
