Basically every major van freight market not named “Seattle” had higher rates last week, especially Houston, Columbus, and Buffalo. Demand was hot for freight moving into the Midwest, with inbound volumes for Chicago and Indianapolis near record levels. Memphis to Indianapolis jumped up 25¢ to $3.08/mile,

Houston is the top market for flatbed loads. Houston to Ft Worth added 23¢, to $2.80/mile. Rock Island, IL to Indianapolis was 41¢ lower, at $3.26/mile. Anyway, that extra demand signaled a rate increase on 50 of the top 78 flatbed lanes last week, and the national average rate gained 11¢ , to $2.50/mile.

Rock Island, IL, to Indianapolis also climbed to $3.03/mile. Houston prices have mostly been neutral, but the lane to Wichita, KS , fell to just $1.77/mile. All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between brokers and carriers. Las Vegas to Sacramento averaged $3.19/mile. mile last week.

In Texas, Houston volumes rose 5%, but were down 3% in Dallas. No major van markets made any big moves in one direction or the other last week, but outbound rates in Houston and Los Angeles have both risen by 5% over the past month. Along the Gulf Coast, Houston to New Orleans was up 15¢ to an average of $2.53/mile.

Aside from Houston, Dallas, and Chicago, every market on the list either held onto its spot or moved up the rankings. Allentown, PA, and Richmond, VA, replaced Indianapolis and Buffalo, NY, in the top 10. Below are this year's top 10 market for van load posts through June, plus where each market ranked at the end of 2017.

More loads are moving out of Cleveland and Houston, but the big surprise was a surge in volume and rates out of Roanoke, Virginia. Rock Island, IL to Indianapolis fell 55¢ to $3.30/mile, The national average flatbed rate dropped 1¢ to $2.66/mile, mile, but it may trend up again before the month ends on Friday. NOT SO HOT.

Rates were also way up on the lanes from Memphis to Indianapolis and Memphis to Dallas. Falling oil prices might have led to lower demand on the lane from Houston to New Orleans , where rates fell 29¢ to $2.33/mile. All rates below include fuel surcharges and are based on real transactions between carriers and brokers.
