There is a shift underway right now in the refrigerated freight segment. More restaurant spending, more contract freight. The big food service outfits have private fleets, or they work with contract carriers, so the restaurant trend "eats away" at the refrigerated freight volume on the spot market. Two main factors are involved.

HOT MARKETS: The biggest changes last week were in California, where reefer freight finally started to move out of Fresno and Sacramento in serious quantities, but load counts fell sharply in L.A. Other markets to hit a lull last week included Miami, Southern Idaho, and Grand Rapids. and Ontario.

Demand for vans continues to heat up on the West Coast, boosting load-to-truck ratios in California, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. Contract carriers are busy with their regularly scheduled hauls, so a lot of the late-arriving freight gets tendered to brokers and 3PLs. Changes in the ratio often signal impending changes in freight rates.

Van freight availability rebounded 3% on the spot market last week , and truck posts increased 2%. Some individual markets offered a lot of loads , and trucks were relatively scarce, creating opportunities in Southern and Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Southern Idaho, much of Wisconsin and Indiana, and Western Pennsylvania.
