Projections for Central California produce are still strong for June, so we’re keeping an eye on the Fresno market, but those shipping gaps meant that rates didn’t continue their upward trend on many of the top reefer lanes. Declining lanes were few and far between.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

In Texas, Houston volumes rose 5%, but were down 3% in Dallas. No major van markets made any big moves in one direction or the other last week, but outbound rates in Houston and Los Angeles have both risen by 5% over the past month. Along the Gulf Coast, Houston to New Orleans was up 15¢ to an average of $2.53/mile.

Nogales, AZ , was the only produce-shipping market to post any big rate increases last week, as many others were down significantly. Minneapolis is hosting the game this year, and around this time last year we saw inbound rates rise to Houston, where the previous Super Bowl was held. Nogales to Los Angeles surged to $3.36/mile.

On the down side, Nogales, AZ, rates slipped lower, and Sacramento gave up the previous week’s gains in rates and volume. Miami rates also dropped 4¢ per mile, but rates and volume there may increase in the coming weeks, as ships full of South American produce are diverted from Houston to the Port of Miami.
