An abundance of capacity has caused van rates to move lower, even though freight volumes in 2019 are actually above previous years' levels. Memphis to Atlanta increased to $2.47/mi. But the momentum has dissipated.

Major Freight Markets Saw Biggest Rate Surge of the Year

Freight patterns showed increased retail trade ahead of Memorial Day weekend, and since some drivers finished the week up early ahead of the holiday weekend, capacity also tightened. Volumes had the steepest declines in Atlanta and Houston , but Memphis van load counts spiked 13%. Atlanta to Memphis paid 22¢ better at $1.93/mile.

Spring Comes Early for Flatbeds in the Southeast

Outbound volume was also down in Cleveland , due to steel’s slump, but Pittsburgh was up for the month. Outbound rates rose in Memphis and Atlanta , but fell in Raleigh and Birmingham. Dallas and Memphis had the biggest drops for flatbed rates last week, and both were negative for the month of December. Memphis to St. Las Vegas to Salt Lake City was up 28¢ to $2.71/mile.

Last week saw strong movements out of Baltimore, Fort Worth, Cleveland and Savannah. Roanoke to Cleveland gained 54¢ to $2.67/mi. Cleveland to Milwaukee increased 50¢ to $4.38/mi.
