Better weather helps push van rates upward

We're finally seeing the impact of better spring weather, with higher freight volumes coming out of both Chicago and Charlotte. Memphis to Indianapolis jumped 17¢ to $2.10/mi. Charlotte to Buffalo also rose 11¢ to $2.24/mi. Memphis to Charlotte slid 7¢ to $1.95/mi. Falling rates.

Van Rates Hit Highest Mark in 2 Years

For the month of May, the biggest rate increases were on outbound lanes from Memphis and Charlotte in the South, and Los Angeles and Stockton in California. Rates were also way up on the lanes from Memphis to Indianapolis and Memphis to Dallas. Pretty much every major van market had higher rates compared to the week before.

Southern States are Red-Hot for Vans

HOT MARKETS – Outbound rates rose by about 10 cents per mile last week in Atlanta , Charlotte , and Memphis , while Dallas rates added an average of 5¢ per mile. The lane rate from Charlotte to Allentown gained 24¢ per mile, to $2.83. Likewise, Memphis to Indianapolis rates moved up 17¢, to $2.32.

Van rates drop to 16-month low

Philadelphia to Charlotte added 10¢ to $1.60/mile. Memphis to Indianapolis dipped 16¢ to $2.01/mile. And rates out of Denver are holding up, for the second week in a row. Denver to Oklahoma City rates rose 13¢ to $1.34/mile. Buffalo to Allentown bumped up 10¢ to $3.18/mile.

Mid-May Spot Market Has Been a Mixed Bag

In the South, volumes were up nearly 9% in Charlotte , but down 3% in Atlanta. Charlotte rates have also been trending upward. Atlanta to Charlotte rose 23¢ to an average of $2.40/mile. In Texas, Houston volumes rose 5%, but were down 3% in Dallas. Short-haul lanes were up, while long-haul lanes were down.
