Freight markets are heating up in the Sun Belt. Flatbeds saw rising freight volume and rates in the Southwest and a handful of Southeastern markets. Freight patterns showed increased retail trade ahead of Memorial Day weekend, and since some drivers finished the week up early ahead of the holiday weekend, capacity also tightened. That's normal, since it comes right after the end of Q1, when shippers are rushing to move freight before closing their books. Reefer freight has been gaining momentum. High volumes of produce are going to urban areas like Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas , so outbound rates fell in those markets.

While van and reefer rates saw a decline in March compared to February, flatbed bucked the trend, making gains in both freight volumes and rates. Plenty of flatbed markets in the South and East experienced rising prices, including Birmingham, Tampa, Atlanta, Savannah, Raleigh, Harrisburg, Dallas and Phoenix. Rising Rates.

Van rates rose sharply last week in Los Angeles and Stockton , and rates are rising in Dallas and Houston , although they’re still not great. Every region has at least one Hot Market for flatbed freight. Outbound rates are moving up in Raleigh, NC, and there’s lots of freight available. That lane is paying $2.18/mile.

At the beginning of the year, DAT Pricing Analyst Mark Montague declared that the freight recession was over.
