Flatbed freight regains footing in December

Loads and Rates Rise as Month Ends

Van rates rose sharply last week in Los Angeles and Stockton , and rates are rising in Dallas and Houston , although they’re still not great. In the Southeast, rates are rising in Atlanta and Charlotte , but Memphis outbound rate trends were mixed, with some lane rates increasing while others declined. That lane is paying $2.18/mile.

October Flatbed Rates Were Highest of the Year

The Memphis market posted the biggest gains for October, with outbound flatbed rates up 10%. The biggest declines for the month were on lanes out of Raleigh and Baltimore. Houston prices have mostly been neutral, but the lane to Wichita, KS , fell to just $1.77/mile. Lots of major flatbed lanes were at or near $3/mile last week.

Memphis had more loads last week, as it replaced Houston as the number 3 market for load availability, following Atlanta and Dallas. Memphis outbound rates were down for the week, but rates are rising in the Midwest, starting with Columbus. Hot Markets include: Jacksonville, Savannah, Raleigh, and Roanoke. mile to $2.12/mile

Major Freight Markets Saw Biggest Rate Surge of the Year

Volumes had the steepest declines in Atlanta and Houston , but Memphis van load counts spiked 13%. Houston to Oklahoma City rose 24¢ to an average of $2.04/mile. The lane from Houston to Chicago was up 17¢ to $1.94/mile. Atlanta to Memphis paid 22¢ better at $1.93/mile. Out West, L.A.

Spring Comes Early for Flatbeds in the Southeast

Outbound rates rose in Memphis and Atlanta , but fell in Raleigh and Birmingham. In Houston , the largest flatbed market by volume, rates were mostly unchanged, but Dallas outbound rates rose 6¢ per mile. Outbound volume was also down in Cleveland , due to steel’s slump, but Pittsburgh was up for the month.

Memphis to Atlanta was up 13¢ at an average of $2.23/mile. Houston to Oklahoma City cooled, falling 15¢ to $1.73/mile. Texas mostly held steady last week, though volumes were off in Houston and rates dipped in Dallas. Atlanta to Raleigh added 39¢ to $2.39/mile. Memphis to Dallas was down 25¢ to $2.54/mile.
