Yesterday, the White House announced that President Obama plans to remove Cuba from the U.S. Cuba relations. All this talk about Cuba, however, sparked a question for me this week: Where does Cuba rank in logistics? Cuba was ranked 152 out of 160 countries with an LPI Score of 2.18, beating only Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan, and a handful of other poorly-developed countries. On that side of my family, only R remains in Cuba, along with my cousin Zu and her son.

A colleague and I traveled to Cuba in March as part of a trade delegation with Engage Cuba, a coalition of private businesses and organizations working to end the travel and trade embargo on Cuba. credit cards don’t work in Cuba, and there are no ATMs. Yet, while most Cubans I met seemed to want to have the barriers lifted, they also want to preserve the Cuba that exists today. The Obama Administration has made it easier for container services to add Cuba as a port of call since they’ve reopened embassies and ended a 54-year diplomatic standstill with the country. In May 2016, the first US cruise ship docked in Cuba since 1978 - opening the door to more travel and business with Cuba, but there are still limitations on trade in goods and services - the US trade embargo is still in place.
