Last week there was a rebound in van freight volumes — up about 8% — as stores continue to move back-to-school groceries and other merchandise before the Labor Day holiday weekend. Rates out of Denver took the biggest jump last week, followed by Columbus, Ohio. Denver to Phoenix increased 18¢ to $1.29/mile.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so trucks are still in high demand to move refrigerated freight. Just like with dry van freight , reefer capacity tightened in the first week of November, meaning that shippers and brokers had a harder time finding trucks to move those reefer loads. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

There’s a lot of freight out there for vans right now, and August had a stronger start than any month in more than a year and a half. National average rates recovered 3¢ per mile last week, due to a boom in freight heading into population centers in the Northeast. down 7¢ to 94¢ per mile.

Plus, freight moves are less urgent at this time of year, so prices down were across the country. Denver to Houston was up 13¢ to $1.37/mile. Denver to Albuquerque was down 30¢ to $2.04/mile. Los Angeles to Phoenix fell 27¢ to $3.10/mile. Still, not many lanes had high higher rates last week.

The number of loads available on the spot market last month was also up more than 100% compared to February 2016, which is a pretty good sign that the freight recession really is over. Since the freight coming out didn’t pay very well, inbound lanes paid more. The freight market in L.A. The rest stayed put.

Freight markets are heating up in the Sun Belt. Flatbeds saw rising freight volume and rates in the Southwest and a handful of Southeastern markets. Outbound rates fell in key Northern markets, including Chicago , Denver , and Philadelphia. Flatbed freight is strongest in the Southeast region, but not in the usual locations.

Rates are rising in Denver , as well. Memphis is associated with consumer goods, including truckload as well as the LTL and package freight from FedEx and UPS. Atlanta is also improving, although there are a lot more empty trucks competing for those loads because of all the inbound freight. Reefer rates rose in Denver.

Things are still quiet in Florida , but produce season should start there really soon, which will help kick spring freight season into gear. Rates are up just 1.5%

Spot market freight has stabilized in recent weeks, and last week we saw load-to-truck ratios rise for every trailer type. For one, lackluster contract freight volumes has led to more contract carriers putting trucks on the spot market, and the extra capacity has kept rates from rising in many places. The other 13 lanes were neutral.
