“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” That’s an oft-quoted saying of uncertain origin dating back to the 1980s. It rings so true, however, that it has often been misattributed to the late Albert Einstein to ensure it maintains it gravitas. Temperatures are rising and people are getting sweaty. We’re inching toward the time of year when sweltering heat can only be quenched by one experience–a dunk in a cool, crisp, clean swimming pool. Sadly enough, that sweet relief may be limited this summer season, as the chlorine shortages experienced in 2021 have made a reappearance. The cause of this tragedy?
Malcolm McLean, a trucker from North Carolina, was tired of waiting. He had a load full of cotton bales, and while idling away hours at a shipyard watching stevedores load other cargo onto ships he dreamed up containers that transformed global supply chains. Loading and unloading trucks was inefficient, so his frustration led to the commercialization of containers that could be moved on and off trucks easily.

Supply variability today. Where are we at? It’s tempting to think of supply variability as a recent phenomenon caused by COVID-19. Supply chain professionals know better. Supply disruptions are as old as trade itself. But the disruptive power of the pandemic was off the charts, as they say. How far off the charts? Depends on the data, of course. Let’s take a look an “index of indexes” recently devised by The Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Many organizations are still struggling to understand and implement basic Sales and Operations Planning processes to cope with supply chain disruption.
