I’m no fan of Big Government, but there are some cases where a system-wide view is much more efficient than a localized, distributed view. Net/Net: The Panama Canal cannot handle the largest ships, and moving a vessel through the Panama canal increases the cost of a container by approximately $8,000. The Panama papers were still hogging the headlines and competing hard against dissections of mishaps in the private lives of British politicians. This irrational behavior continues in light of a 3-year effort by the Chinese government to telegraph in no uncertain terms the switch from an economy based on manufacturing to services.
