Reefer Demand Dips, But Rates Don't

Denver has the lowest average outbound reefer rate in the country, and inbound rates rose last week, to compensate: L.A. to Denver rose 37¢ to $3.23 Dallas to Denver was up 24¢ to $2.67 Chicago to Denver increased 19¢ to $2.20 Miami to Baltimore and Miami to Boston each fell an average of 22¢ per mile.

Reefer rates rise as Florida hits its stride

Lakeland, FL to Baltimore surged 85¢ to $2.86/mi. Miami to Baltimore gained 51¢ to $3.05/mi. Fresno to Denver fell 15¢ to $2.32/mi. Arizona - Both volumes and rates remained about the same from the U.S./Mexico Mexico border market of Nogales, AZ. Rising rates. Lakeland, FL to Charlotte jumped 57¢ to $2.62/mi.

Reefer Freight Adjusts to Post-Holidays, Post-ELD

Miami, Denver, Sacramento and Lakeland, FL , all experienced sharp drops last week. Denver to Salt Lake City plunged 79¢ to $1.92/mile mile – high rates in Denver typically don’t last long. Miami to Baltimore dropped 99¢ to $2.39/mile. Los Angeles to Portland, OR, tumbled 50¢ to $4.18/mile.

Rates rise, but gains may be temporary

The three largest price increases last week came out of Denver. Denver is a big beer producing market, with both large production breweries and smaller craft brewers shipping beer in vans and reefers. Denver to Albuquerque jumped 28¢ to $2.35/mile. Denver to Oklahoma City gained 21¢ to $1.41/mile.

Spot Market Reefer Rates Hit a 3-Year High

Here is a pair of lanes that truckers could run back to back: Sacramento to Denver added 38¢ for an average of $2.78/mile. Denver to Houston surged 48¢ to $2.34/mile. The lane to Baltimore lost 37¢ at just $1.30/mile. On average, outbound lanes from Fresno, CA , soared 13%.
