For van freight, we’re starting to see hot markets shift westward, with big rate increases out of Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver and Stockton, CA. Outbound van rates have soared more than 40% in Seattle in the past month. Seattle to Eugene, OR surged 70¢ to an average of $3.14/mile. RISING LANES. mile average.

Together, the ratio and rates offer strong evidence yet that the freight recession is over. Higher prices out of Memphis and Columbus tell us that retail traffic is moving, and higher rates out of Dallas and Seattle show us that the improvement is far-reaching. Seattle to Spokane was up 20¢ to $2.70/mile.

Seasonal harvests are winding down, but capacity is still tight for reefer freight. Reefer rates on the lane from Sacramento to Portland soared 70¢ to $3.42/mile. Fresno to Seattle was up 30¢ to $2.80/mile. That’s led to higher reefer rates on the West Coast and in the Midwest. Be careful out there.

Refrigerated produce freight has been notably absent from the picture, so that likely has some reefers competing for van freight. National Average Freight Rates - April to-date. Los Angeles and Seattle had slight bumps up in pricing, but nothing exceptional. Sacramento to Portland, OR, also gained 23¢ to $2.93/mi.

Freight rates were relatively calm back when the full enforcement of the ELD mandate went into effect on April 1, as conditions had already settled into what’s feeling like the "new normal." Basically every major van freight market not named “Seattle” had higher rates last week, especially Houston, Columbus, and Buffalo.

The demand for refrigerated trailers peaked at year-end, but the extra-cold weather in many parts of the country has kept prices at record-setting levels in many areas, since those trailers are being used to keep freight from freezing. Ontario, CA to Seattle was up 59¢ to $4.18/mile. Nogales to Los Angeles surged to $3.36/mile.
