Still, demand for reefer trucks was sky high last week, with volumes up out of big produce markets in California, Texas, and Florida. Reefer rates out of Miami also surged, and the lane to Baltimore added 54¢ to an average of $2.28/mile. The lane from Dallas to Denver shot up 53¢, to $2.58/mile.

Prices continued to slide out of Florida and California , with the exception of Sacramento. The biggest drop last week was on the lane from Lakeland, FL, to Baltimore , which dropped 69¢ to $2.23/mile. to Phoenix dropped 33¢ but still averaged $3.35/mile.

Miami to Baltimore rates tumbled 62¢ to $2.37/mile. Down in Miami , rates on several lanes are settling into off-season pricing. Miami to Atlanta fell 26¢ last week to $1.72/mile.

Even Florida surged 52%, though that was with much lower load counts. The lane to Baltimore lost 37¢ at just $1.30/mile. Fresh produce often drives the demand for reefer freight, and this year, wet fields and high summer temps led to late planting and lower yields out of California. Now, reefer freight seems to be everywhere.

After interruptions caused by recent wildfires, produce was shipping out of Florida again, and the biggest rate increases were on lanes leaving the state: Miami to Northern New Jersey reefer rates were up 17¢ to $2.26/mile. Central Florida is hitting peak season, and the lane from Lakeland to Baltimore added 24¢ to $2.24/mile.

Nogales, AZ has been hot for freight, as well as Lakeland in central Florida. Miami to Baltimore slipped 75¢ to a more-normal $2.13/mile. The lane from Nogales to Dallas surged 61¢ to $3.38/mile. The Midwest is quiet, however, with weak volume out of Rock Island, IL, as well as Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Baltimore to the east. Four of the top five markets for van load posts are in the Southeast region: Atlanta , Charlotte , Greenville , and Lakeland.

WHAT'S NOT - Florida. Most rates out of Florida were down last week. SURPRISES - One big surprise lane last week went against the trend: Miami to Baltimore jumped up 35¢ to $2.72.The Los Angeles to Portland climbed 20¢ to an average of $4.13/mile. Lakeland to Atlanta dropped 56¢ to $1.91/mile.
