'I have thought about this for a long time. I have envisioned a community where supply chain professionals could network freely and globally. I wanted to design a virtual environment where teams can share best practices and have fun. My dream was to build a place that combines the best of the virtual communities of Linkedin, Facebook, Craigslist, FourSquare and Yelp and roll it into a business-to-business social community that is specially designed for the supply chain leader.
'Who said supply chains are boring? Whenever I tell a friend, colleague or family member about my job as soon as the words "supply chain" are muttered I immediately see glassy eyes followed by a yawn or two. Little do they realize that every time they discard or recycle a carton of milk they are completing the end of the supply chain cycle. Without supply chains consumers would be stuck using products that they had to make or grow with their own two hands.
'The Kühne Foundation invited me to support its Africa Logistics Initiative. Consequently, I have spent the last weeks teaching in logistics and supply chain management at the National Institute of Transport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It has been a great experience.

In global supply chain , most companies try to take an advantage of low-cost country sourcing to drive material costs down. The complexity of this practice is how to divide the responsibilities of each trading partner effectively.
The $53 trillion manufacturing economy in the US is undergoing a major automation paradigm shift due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Interest in inventory optimization continues to increase as companies seek a more efficient way to reduce excess inventory while maintaining or improving customer service levels. Multi-echelon inventory optimization (MEIO) is also playing a larger role in the sales and operations planning process (S&OP). Recently I sat down with Sean Willems, Ph.D., associate professor of Operations Management at Boston University's School of Management and Chief Scientist at Logility, to get his thoughts on
'Before I start this blog, you need to know that I am a self-confessed research snob. I take it seriously and have high standards. I have been doing supply chain research for the past nine years. It sounds easier than it is. I have learned a lot on this journey. There are a lot of nuances. I am fortunate to have learned from Pros. I have experienced the research methodologies of three analyst firms ( Gartner, AMR Research and Altimeter Group ).

'In their recently published JBL paper, A natural resource scarcity typology: Theoretical foundations and strategic implications for supply chain management , Bell et al. (2012) rightly note: “Scarcity of critical natural resources such as oil, water, food, and precious metals has the potential to greatly impact commercial activity as the twenty-first century progresses” In deed, avoiding waste of resources has become a top priority for many supply chain practitioners.

'‘Keep on trucking’ has a new meaning. According to the latest American Shipper benchmark survey, transportation spending increased in 2012 – according to 75 percent of respondents – remaining unscathed by budget cuts. Shockingly, though, companies are failing to invest in the necessary procurement tools to manage spend and optimize their transportation networks.
'I recently wrote about how the shift to cloud computing moves the burden of installing, operating, or maintaining software from you to your vendor, and how the four phases of the software lifecycle shift as well. The new lifecycle phases are launch, perform, optimize, and continually improve. In this transition, as the consumer of the software, you should expect to see benefits across the board as both you and your vendor evolve.

'On a recent trip to the Oregon coast I took a photo that I’ve been quite anxious to share. There, along the beautiful, pristine beach, where sea lions gather and people search for seashells, I found this: A beautiful wooden pallet. Lost track of. Serving no purpose. Cluttering the landscape. Wasting some company’s money. So, when I see an article about the benefits of Returnable Transport Items (RTIs) such as plastic pallets, totes, containers and bins, I pay particular notice.
The race to dominate AI is no longer about who has the smartest algorithms — it's about who can build and scale faster. Behind every AI breakthrough lies a battle for resources: data centers, compute hardware, power, and telecom infrastructure. And right now, even tech giants are hitting a wall. 'In spite of high scientific quality, academic manuscripts sometimes do not survive the peer review process just because they are written in broken English. Therefore, researchers should conceal from their reviewers that they are non-native speakers. For sure, a traditional dictionary is an essential tool on the “word level” But, a combination of correctly spelled words is not sufficient on the “sentence level” Therefore, I would like to recommend Linguee to you, which wa

The amended final rules propose a more flexible scheme than the previous proposal and introduce differentiated requirements for companies reporting to the S.E.C. according to parameters such as their activities, size, use of recycled materials.

As an alternative to playing the discount game and further eroding margins, many retailers have found tremendous success with private label products. By offering innovative goods at a reasonable cost, retailers have successfully distinguished their brands and helped engender consumer loyalty. This is a sound strategy, but it can easily backfire if the supply chain infrastructure is not in place to support it.
'RFID has proved to be highly useful to improve track and trace capabilities for improving food safety and dealing with recalls. However, here’s another angle associated with food that you may not have thought about: authenticity. How do you know where your food came from or that it is what it claims to be? Let’s say you’re paying $6 more a pound for wild salmon at your favorite grocery store.

'What is required to justify automation? How the acronym, S.A.L.T., is a way to think about the issues to consider before automating your warehouse or provide the justification to go forward with an automated materials handling project. Hi, I am Cory Flemings from abco automation. Have you ever considered automating your warehouse? Have you ever thought about what would be required to justify putting in automated systems inside your distribution center?
