Today’s blog is a guest blog by my former student, Krunal Sonpal. The topic is a timely one, the on-going US-Chinese tariffs and what it means for supply chain executives. This is an issue that should cause every supply chain executive to take notice, and start thinking about the strategic imperatives that lie ahead… US and China are currently on a “trade-war” which started when U.S. proposed to increase tariffs specifically on Chinese goods valued at $200 billion in September from

Yawn. I spent time this week completing reference calls on the use of S&OP technologies. Seeking the next sequel in technology adoption, I want to write how the confluence of new technologies changed companies’ abilities to improve decisions. Based on the reference calls, I am not sure that this will be possible. What am I hearing? Eerily the case studies sound the same as the ones heard when I completed S&OP research in 2004.
A version of this article originally appeared on JOC.com. . A few days ago, Amazon announced one day delivery plans. In itself, that’s a big deal, but its significance is compounded when you consider the trucking shipment volumes such a move will require; it’s essentially jet fuel for their new freight brokerage business. Take into account their FBA warehouse footprint, NVOCC license, and SEC reports flagging forwarders as competition, and you have a solid reminder that Amazon is coming for gl

Robots are a cornerstone of a smart factory, automating a wide range of manufacturing tasks that are monotonous, physically straining, or even hazardous. However, real-world robotics deployments have not lived up to the revolutionary potential the industrial sector had originally envisioned. Robot implementations are typically confined to specific applications, carry high costs, and are time-consuming.
Commercialization strategies evolve, supply chains expand, and production rates accelerate. The only way to take control of your future is to double down on quality. Product quality directly impacts the profitability of a company. The cost of poor quality is so closely related to supplier quality and compliance that manufacturers must give the proper attention and resources to the optimization of their upstream partnerships.

Nearly 900 million people around the world are malnourished. Yet every year we waste 1.6 billion tons of food – fully a third of all the food produced globally. It's estimated to be worth US$1.2 trillion now and may grow to $1.5 trillion by 2030 if nothing is done to stop it. And if that's not scary enough, food waste is deemed responsible for eight percent of global greenhouse gases – the ones that cause global warming. [1] Now, if we tell you that this waste is largely avoidable, and as a supp

“What should we do about the tariffs?” There’s no straightforward answer — every leader has a different expectation. CFOs want numbers. COOs want action. CEOs want strategy. And supply chain and procurement leaders need to be ready with the right response — fast. That’s why GEP has created a simple three-part framework that will help CPOs and CSCOs brief the board and C-suite with clarity and confidence.
Doug Keeley, Product Marketing Manager, Ivalua. The most fundamental spend categorization in Procurement is the line between direct and indirect spend, but one effort that transcends this split is supplier management. This includes supplier information management, supply chain risk management/mitigation, and supplier performance management. Whether spend is direct or indirect, supplier information should be maintained centrally and with a high level of accuracy.

What is Supply Chain? Supply chain is essentially the entire behind-the-scenes network that links a product from its point of origination to its final destination. Think from manufacturing to consumer, and every single step in between. Supply chains are often very complex as they encompass all vendors, warehouses, retailers, and so on that bring a product to life and then to a customer.
