Supply chain attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, and manufacturing stakeholders should prepare for the cyber threats that are most likely to impact their operations.
In my recent Mea Culpa post, I mentioned my prior work on Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), and the importance of leadership. Sounds easy, right? Leadership and S&OP? Shouldn’t it be like peanut butter and jelly? If you have walked in the shoes of the supply chain leader, you are probably laughing by now. What sounds so easy is very difficult.
As reported by Paul Wiseman on February 7th, “For the first time in more than two decades, Mexico [in 2023] surpassed China as the leading source of goods imported by the United States.” This news prompted us to ask members of our Indago supply chain research community — who are all supply chain and logistics. In late 2023, Descartes conducted a survey of 1,000 supply chain and logistics decision-makers across North America and Europe across three sectors: manufacturing, distribution and retail; carriers; and logistics services providers. Despite several attempts and how hard I tried; I was never able to program the VHS tape recorder. I ended up with the end of Match of the Day or whatever was on BBC2 when I wanted the show on BBC1. Many times I recorded absolutely nothing; just hissing, white noise static. Times have changed and now I simply have to press ‘record’ or even just speak out the command ‘record anything NOT containing Ant and Dec’ into a Firestick handset.

My LinkedIn news feed is full of congratulatory notes for companies listed on the Gartner Top 25 released yesterday. Tech companies celebrate their companies on the list, consultants give themselves pats on the back, and the companies making the list congratulate their employees. My issue is that the Gartner methodology celebrates underperformers. The lack of clarity and discipline in the methodology gives the industry a false signal to define supply chain excellence.
In our everyday lives, we often navigate uncertainty using a probabilistic approach without even realizing it. Take weather-dependent activities, for instance. When planning your weekend, you might check a 5-day weather forecast, which provides probabilities of rain, sunshine, or cloudy skies. Armed with this information, you make decisions like whether to have a picnic, garden or stay indoors.
60 cents. That is all that is separating my son from his college diploma. I received an invoice from Cornell University this week for 60 cents. After paying them a ridiculous $$$,$$$ of my hard-earned money over the past four years, they still want some of the spare change I have in my car. I’m. “What should we do about the tariffs?” There’s no straightforward answer — every leader has a different expectation. CFOs want numbers. COOs want action. CEOs want strategy. And supply chain and procurement leaders need to be ready with the right response — fast. That’s why GEP has created a simple three-part framework that will help CPOs and CSCOs brief the board and C-suite with clarity and confidence.

In 2016, we finished a study on continuous improvement. When I started this research project, I was busy. The survey was one of many, and I found the project relatively nondescript, bordering on boring. One of my lessons learned in completing survey-based research over the past twelve years, is that projects are full of surprises. The hypothesis that seems so right are often wrong, and surprises lay in each nook and cranny.
Following 45 days of negotiations, the European Council approved a watered-down version of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. The EU CSDDD has had a difficult journey, facing delays, changes, and hurdles to overcome. Nonetheless, the direction of travel of European governments is clear: companies need to do more to identify their exposure to unethical practices, human rights abuses, and significant adverse environmental issues , across their value chain.

Wikipedia In 2014, I was exploring methods to publish what is now the Supply Chains To Admire report. Fortuitously, I hired a bright summer intern named Alex that introduced me to orbit charts. The use of orbit charts allowed me to see the patterns of performance at the intersection of metrics over time.

Over the past two years, I taught over 600 students the principles of outside-in processes. I also taught five technology companies. Some attendees express interest and then state, “Interesting Lora, but no one is asking for this functionality.” I bite my tongue wanting to reply, “Did anyone ask Henry Ford to build a car?
