Despite the economic malaise in Western Europe, multinationals are investing heavily in manufacturing and distribution in the eastern part of the continent. The Balkans are also an emerging manufacturing region for Europe. The growth in intercontinental freight flows into Europe is primarily coming from the Far East, and particularly from China, although these freight flows are increasingly heading for eastern Mediterranean and Baltic Sea ports.
