VAN TRENDS. REEFER TRENDS. Western produce picked up in nearly every market, led by gains in Twin Falls, ID and Fresno in Central California. Fresno to Denver added 20¢ to hit $3.18/mile. The map depicts outbound load-to-truck ratios by state, for dry van freight. Buffalo to Columbus dropped 12¢ to $2.09/mile.

Right now, retail and e-commerce are driving trends in the transportation industry, which has lifted van rates, but prices fell on a lot of the major reefer lanes. Fresno to Baltimore fell 29¢ at $2.41/mile. Reefer activity picked up after Thanksgiving, but not nearly as much as dry van freight.

The decline is a normal seasonal trend, reflecting a change in the mix of cargo and lanes. HOT MARKETS - There was an increase in loads moving out of Fresno last week, which is a welcome change. HOT MARKETS - Outbound rates were trending down in most major markets. McAllen , TX also got a boost, likely from cross-border traffic.

Otherwise, reefer trends were all over the place last week. Out West, Fresno and nearby Sacramento were off for this time of year. The lane from Fresno to Denver was down 21¢ to $2.01/mile, Darker-colored states have higher load-to-truck ratios, meaning that there's less competition for reefer loads in those states.

Out of California , volumes were flat, with higher load counts out of the Fresno area offset by declines farther south. California produce should gain strength in the coming weeks.

While the Lakeland, FL market was a big winner last week — gaining over 20% more volume — those gains were more than offset by a week-over-week slump in other major reefer markets, including Fresno, Nogales, Boise and much of the Midwest. The net result was that prices dropped 3¢ in March compared to the February average.

Fresno volumes were down unexpectedly, and so were load counts out of the Ontario market in Southern California and along the border in Nogales, AZ. Out West, Fresno to Denver lane rates two weeks ago, but fell 56¢ last week, to an average of $2.58 The last time it was that high was in August 2015.

For example, look for rates to rise in Fresno instead of L.A. , Reefer freight volume is building in Fresno , so look for rates to trend up there, even as volume and rates decline in L.A. and in Memphis instead of Atlanta. You can always find a load in Atlanta , but it may pay less than it did in June.

Out of California , Fresno outbound pricing jumped 4.4% That could have been a contributing factor to the tighter reefer truckload capacity that we saw last week, with truck posts on DAT load boards down 5% for reefers. VAN TRENDS. REEFER TRENDS. Rate increases were seen in Fresno, CA , and McAllen, TX , two of the nation's top produce markets. The van load-to-truck ratio declined 9% last week to 4.2 loads per truck. The national average van rate held steady at $1.88/mile mile last week. We did get the expected bump in rates out of Fresno though, and California produce shipments are expected to remain strong at least until the 4th of July. A few lanes out of California crossed the $3 mark: The biggest jump in price was on the lane from Fresno to Denver , which surged 61¢ to $3.14/mile.

Reefer demand and rates declined steadily throughout February, which is a pretty typical spot market trend. Volumes were up in California , especially out of Fresno. The declines in reefer rates were steeper than the similar declines in van rates, but reefer prices were also extremely elevated heading into the month.

In fact, van rates have gone up in December for the past three years, and this year looks to continue that trend. Reefer trends haven't been quite as dramatic, but the national reefer rate in November did end up 6¢ higher than October’s average. Out of California, reefer loads paid less in Ontario and Fresno.

For van rates , rising lanes continue to outnumber falling lanes on a week-to-week basis, but it’s been a slow, long-term trend. There haven't been any significant downward trends in any major markets. Trucks are still relatively easy to find in some parts of the country, which has put a speed limiter on rising rates.

Prices did spike out of Lakeland, FL , but that could be short-lived without an increase in volumes: Reefer rates on the lane from Lakeland to Charlotte surged 41¢ to $1.93/mile. Out West, the extra-long haul from Fresno to Boston rose 29¢ to $2.41/mile. The biggest spike was the lane from Chicago to Kansas City , which surged 49¢ up to $3.10/mile. Chicago to Minneapolis also climbed 21¢ to $2.76/mile. Chicago to Denver soared 27¢ to $3.17/mile.

Even though rates are slow to respond, freight volumes are rising as we get closer to the fall holidays of Halloween and Thanksgiving.
