Yes, companies held more inventory (measured in days of inventory) in 2019 than at the start of the 2007 recession. Commercial and operating teams in manufacturing organizations greater than 5B$ in annual revenue were more aligned in 2007, at the beginning of the recession, than in 2020, the start of the pandemic. The answer would definitely be within the last 10 years. The first iPhone only came out in 2007 – ushering in smart phone apps and all the rest in very quick succession. That said, when was the technology there to even make ordering from an app possible? Before that, all the needed elements would not yet have been in place.

I work with a group that has a sub-team focused on cost, one on customer service, and one on inventory, but lack alignment on a standard definition of supply chain excellence. On average, industries carry 38 more days of inventory than in 2007. As we enter Q2, companies face the lashing with the big black whip.

Time to Sense Market Shifts in the 2007 Recession. By definition, in the current state, supply chain planners work in a lose/lose environment.
